Long polearms allow pikemen to attack from a short distance and enable multiple ranks to attack at the same time. This makes them extremely powerful against melee units and more versatile in battle, but also makes their training more expensive: ranged pikemen cost +10 food.
The following civilisations are able to train ranged pikemen:
Bohemia, Brittany, Flanders, France, Helvetia, Poland, Scotland
Other units that profit from ranged polearms:
Flemish Infantry(Burgundy), Swiss Pikeman(Helvetia), Swiss Guard(France)
