In order to be fair, as melee weapons began being forged, arrows began to be fletched. This innovation, which involves sticking feathers on the backs of arrows for aerodynamic stabilization, leads to a better punch and better range. Not only foot archers did benefit from this: archers on ships and in buildings also applied fletching to their own equipment.
